Coming Soon: A historical suspense trilogy set in Post-Gold Rush California, (the late 1860s) due for launch in 2017. I love this period because it was so unpredictable. Anything could happen – and very often did. And that gives a writer’s women characters a chance to play outside the normal confines of social rules – which mine do with determined verve!
Maybe I’m also a little influenced by childhood holidays on New Zealand’s beautiful Coromandel coast, close to my childhood home on the farm. Like our friends across the Tasman in Australia, we had our own “Gold Rush” here. And as children we’d sneak into disused gold mines in the hills and lug home souvenired quartz boulders. (I shudder to think of the health and safety rules we were breaking, and I don’t know that our Mum even knew where we were. My sister and I lived in a very “Famous Five” kind of universe, where we threw notes wrapped around stones in one another’s bedroom windows.)
Then when I got hooked on genealogy I discovered there was a lot of traffic between New Zealand and Australia and California during the Gold Rush period. Indeed a great-great-uncle of mine, one Thomas Wheeler, had no sooner arrived in Auckland from Worcestershire England, than he hopped on a boat to California and stayed away ten years, returning with an American wife. What better reason could I have to include both New Zealand and Australian characters in the books?
As I hope you can tell I am having a huge amount of fun researching and writing this series, but I’m not going to release the first one until number two and three are very close to ready, so that will be sometime in 2017.
