As a novelist from the farthest edge of the ocean – and with half my family living in Australia – I had an irresistible impulse to include an Australian man in my story, because Of Gold & Blood is really is a Pacific saga – with touch points in the big circle of Hong Kong, San Francisco, Auckland and Sydney. I also have a sneaky wish to have an excuse to develop an Australian based trilogy in the series at some time in the future, and Nathan’s Aussie family still have a lot of surprises to reveal to us.
Aussie men can be so attractive too. Take Chris Hemsworth for example… Doesn’t he make a perfect Nathan? (I’ve also had quite a bit of reader feedback that they love Nathan as a character.)

Five Things You Might Not Know About Nathan Russell
- As the youngest brother Nathan started out in life as a bit of a clown. His older brothers shielded him from having to take responsibility. But the school of hard knocks has left the clown very bashed up, and these days he’s very aware of how he failed those he loved. The great thing is, he’s capable of learning from his mistakes.
- He believes he never loved his first wife Charlotte as she deserved, and he feels bad about it. He’s ashamed that he went along with the marriage because they were very close and their families expected it, but he never really wanted to marry her. He understands now that she deserved better.
- When he first meets Graysie she seems aloof and a little conceited, with an ‘I know best’ attitude. And he considers she isn’t acknowledging the dangers she is exposing Minette to.
- He tells himself he’s just hanging in there for Minette’s sake long after it isn’t true any more.
- The death of his son has left him with a latent desire to father which comes out in his relationship with Antonio as well as Minette.
